Mandy Shintani, has been an occupational therapist for 30+ years and is a gerontologist. Fifteen years ago, with her skills as an OT, she developed the evidence-based Activator Poles (patented) and technique specifically for rehabilitation, which are the focus of 10 current studies. She is an international conference speaker on Nordic walking/urban poling for rehabilitation and fitness.  Research on the Activator poles have been the focus of international presentations/posters including; International Stroke Congress, Canadian & UK National Physical Therapy Association Conference, International 200 years of Parkinson’s Disease in Australia, ACPIN Neuro conference (UK) and twice at the National Fall Prevention conference (Canada) 5,500+ therapists and wellness professionals in Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland and recently in the USA have completed the courses she developed for fitness and rehabilitation. She has been featured numerous times in national media and was a finalist in the prestigious YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

    Focusing Reactive Balance in Fall Prevention

    Older adults and individuals with neurologic conditions are at an increased fall risk. The ability to produce quick reactive stepping is a critical component to decrease this risk and improve function. Perturbation-based balance training (PBBT) is an innovative intervention design with a goal of improving control of the needed rapid balance reaction. In this session, a highlight of the literature for the use of PBBT will be provided. In addition, videos of a few key outcome measures along with intervention progressions. The focus will be on translating the evidence to successfully implement PBBT-type interventions for any patient diagnosis.

    In this 30-45 minute series attendees will learn some of the common techniques we, at Harry Physical Therapy & Wellness, use to treat clients in the home. We will showcase some equipment that we bring as well as some unique exercises to increase stability, strength, and functional independence.

David T. Neuman

MD, FAAOS
Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon

David T. Neuman, MD is owner and clinical director of NY Sportscare, located in New York City, NY. He attended Cornell University and completed medical school at the State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn. David successfully completed a four-year orthopedic surgery residency and one-year Fellowship at Temple University, where he received specialty training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery.
Dr. Neuman specialized in general arthroscopic surgery with a sports medicine philosophy. His practice philosophy includes utilizing physical therapy and home exercises to help an injured joint recover to a functional state. His primary goal as an orthopedic surgeon is to help people diminish pain and increase the function of a damaged joint. Dr. Neuman believes that health and fitness are an important part of everyday life.
Dr. Neuman is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is an instructor and member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of the State of New York, and several other medical societies. He is an internationally published author and international speaker.
Recently, Dr. Neuman founded and created a joint-health healthcare start-up called Pop-Doc.com. It is an online musculoskeletal health community, serving to educate people about joints, and offer web-based controlled exercises and joint-health activities for those with joint pain, joint injury, or after joint surgery. In addition, the site is for those motivated people who want to practice preventive orthopedics or stay active in their preferred sport. As a final point, he is the Executive Director of the non-profit, Joint Education Outreach. The organization utilizes local professionals to give age-appropriate joint-health presentations and symposia to school-age children. To this end, Joint Education Outreach serves to raise joint health awareness: educate and empower children to have a better understanding of their bodies so they can be an asset to society and suffer with less joint pain.

Fitz Harry, Mobile PT, Movement Expert

Dr. Fitzherbert “Fitz” Harry, a native to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, has always been passionate about helping others since a young age. Dr. Harry began his career as a biology and math teacher in high school and university settings. After earning is doctorate in Physical Therapy he eventually became disappointed in the current healthcare model. He believes that patients should be treated like family, not just as a typical patient. It was because of his desire to get away from the more common “physical therapy mill” approach that he started his own business, Harry Physical Therapy and Wellness, LLC. Here, unlike any other mobile practices in Florida, the patient comes first, they are part of every step in goal-setting. And, with Dr. Harry’s support they progress faster, and in the convenience of their own home.

Fitz’s experience with teaching has transferred over in his way to adapt his methods to people of all different learning types. His passion for health and fitness inspire his patients. His love of science and learning means that he is constantly keeping up with the very best evidence-based practice research. By doing so, he can improve patients outcomes more quickly and efficiently. Dr. Harry is also certified in LSVT BIG and PWR! therapy: a researched based program proven to improve function in Parkinson’s patients. He is also a certified myofascial trigger point therapist helping to target pain in patients. Fitz has done countless educational programs in balance disorders, fall prevention and geriatrics. Fitz fully believes that physical therapy should be engaging and enjoyable. Each session is tailored to patient’s needs and goals.

J.J. Mowder-Tinney 

PT, PhD, NCS, C/NDT, CSRS, CEEAA

J.J. Mowder-Tinney PT, PhD, NCS, C/NDT, CSRS, CEEAA has 25 years of experience in a multitude of clinical settings with the majority of experience with people with neuromuscular deficits. She is certified as a clinical specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS). She also has extensive training and has earned her Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist (CSRS) from the American Stroke Association and her Certified Exercise Expert in Aging Adults (CEEAA) from the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy. Dr. Mowder-Tinney conducts nationwide seminars on the Treatment of Patients with Neurological deficits, Spinal Cord injuries, Balance challenges and Parkinson’s Disease. In 2017, she was the recipient of the Award for Excellence in Neurologic Education from the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy of the American Physical Therapy Association.
